Making Time For Me

A couple of months ago now my husband made plans to go out of town this weekend.  He traveled to the other side of the state to hang out with his best friend.

A few weeks ago, my in-laws asked me to come up with a weekend when they could take the youngest three kids for a couple of days.  Well, I asked about this weekend.  Thinking if it works out, then I will have a day or two to myself.

My co-workers had brought up a Pierogi Festival in Detroit that was starting last night. Once I knew that the kids were going to be gone, I said “I’m going.”  I went to work that Monday and said OK, the kids won’t be here, lets plan on this!!  Over the following couple of weeks the plans progressed.

Separate from my love for Polish food is the fact that I have been talking about getting my nose pierced seriously for the last few months.  My husband, as always was supportive, God Bless him.  I spoke with a myriad of friends, co-workers and family members about the idea.

My friend Jess said “Oh, you can totally pull that off.”  My daughter Jordan said “That would be sick Mom.”  (For the record I asked if she meant sick as in gross and she said “no, as in Rad.”  LOL….she is 7.  Nearly everyone I spoke to said “You should totally do it.”

I have wanted my nose pierced since I was 18 years old.  My Dad scared me into thinking that if I had anything on my face pierced that I wouldn’t be able to get a job.  So, I never did it.  I respected that and of course I wanted to find a career I was passionate about and not be held back because of a decision I made as a teenager.

Well, I have the job/career that I am passionate about.  And lucky for me, it is with an organization that allows its employees to express themselves.  I thought, my husband and my kids are going to be gone, it is the weekend before my birthday….what better time to do it?

So after talking to my co-workers we decided to start the evening by going to the tattoo parlor.  I got my nose pierced and my co-worker Julie got the cartilage of her ear pierced.  I cried tears of joy after it was done.  I told the gentleman who did the piercing that “I loved him a little bit” for doing it.  I know, I am a GIANT dork.

Then we went to a wonder German bar.  So many beers on draft and in bottle.  I got a flight and shared it with my friends.  Then I ordered a beer that my husband would have been proud of.  I like trying new beers and when I see something that I know I may not have the opportunity to try again, I give it a whirl.  The appetizers were 1/2 off, we had bacon stuffed potato pancakes, corned beef spring rolls and soft pretzels….all which were so delicious.

After a couple of hours, we dropped cars off at my friends house and took 1 car down to Detroit to the Pierogi festival.  Once we arrived we saw this GIANT line for pierogies.  I mean hundreds of people in line.  We stood in line for over 2 hours.  We made friends, we listened to polka music and we drank.  Then at like 9:45 PM (they were closing at 10PM) we finally made it under the food tent to order!  Potato pancakes and pierogies.  They were amazing and work the 2 hour wait.

I had an incredible time last night.  It has been a very long time since I just went out and did whatever I wanted to do without having to worry about anything other than me!  It was so awesome.

  1. Bacon stuffed potato pancakes are really a thing? That alone was worth the outing.
I keep saying I am going to get a little bitty tatoo but I haven’t been brave enough. Good for you for getting your nose pierced. I get the tears and the affection for the piercing guy.

    1. That isn’t what they were actually called LOL. They were potato pancakes that had bacon in them. They were served smothered in melted cheese with scallions on top with a side of sour cream and a cucumber/wasabi ranch!!! Talking about them makes me want some more real bad right now 🙂
