Ultimately, sure. We are in charge of our own happiness. For me, I’ve come to believe that pursuit of happiness is chasing windmills…just when I get on that happiness high, something in life comes along to pull me down. So now? I pursue holiness and the funny thing is, my happiness is increasing. Go figure! 🙂 HUGS
While I believe that happiness is a fleeting emotion, not a state of mind, I still do not think it is completely in our control, nor should it be. Life happens, people die, medications don’t work, someone is rude to us, we don’t get the promotion we wanted. I don’t think in those moments happiness is appropriate. I have had people come up to me at those moments and tell me to think of all good things. The moments I had with the person, the learning that can occur when interacting with others, the paths open to me without the promotion. I get it. There is always a way of looking at things from a bright side. But there is nothing wrong with not being happy. The positive thinker would say you can’t appreciate the good times without the bad times. I think of it more as – it’s thre reality of life. And while the idea that you make your own happiness is empowering and inspiring, I think it can bring false hope to people. Because sometimes, you just can’t. But I’m a little cranky, so who knows. LOL.
