Thursday Teenage Spotlight: 12/22

Hi, I’m Hannah.  I blog at Can’t Be Sad In This Rad Life.

Well let’s start off with the fact that I’m 17 and have absolutely no idea what I’m doing after high school. I might go to college, I’m not really sure yet. I’ve learned that it’s possible to make a living off of a high school degree with our ever improving media platforms such as Instagram, twitter, and YouTube. Many of my friends have created businesses online when they were sophomores in high school and every younger. My friend has a bikini business and has over 6,000 followers on Instagram and another friend of mine buys and sells/ assembles drones.

I’ve always been taught that if I don’t go to college I might as well pick out a nice box to live in. Since the day and age of my parents, college has become increasingly more competitive and jobs as well. A college degree can be a make or break deal. However in this day and age more and more teens are utilizing social media to create their own businesses and are actually surprisingly successful. It’s not only milenials taking advantage of this opportunity. Look at Casey Neinstat, the famous YouTuber.

I don’t think we rely completely on technology for our happiness either, its is a tool we have created, in part, as a distraction from the real world. I go backpacking every summer without  any technology to take a break from our screens that are marvelous relics of our technology but harmful mental health distractions. In this day and age I think a lot of teens understand the importance of taking a break from technology. It’s a cleanse, that’s all the rage these days anyways. To purify yourself, through health both physical and mental.

I don’t believe money determines happiness in any day or age. It’s simply a tool we use to get around. Perhaps it’s just me but I rather live paycheck to paycheck traveling the country than living in lavish conditions in a mansion on a hill. Adventure drives me, not the incentive of cash. I think younger people are getting involved in important social and political matters and should be taken more seriously than just some stupid teenagers. That’s just my thoughts on our generation. I know that mine will most likely be comparatively different from others because we are all individuals, but that’s just my opinion on what it’s like to be a teenager in 2016.
