I’m watching a show on A&E about online dating. These are not the positive, lovely, happy ever after stories you see in the commercials. These stories are about women who ended up raped, beaten or stalked.

It has me thinking. First and foremost, so grateful nothing like this ever happened to me. For about 8 months or so I was part of the online dating scene back in 2010-2011.

I had nothing but good experiences. Lucky for me, I ended up in a beautiful marriage thanks to OKCupid.

However, I do have some thoughts. I believe online dating can work, can be safe and fun. When you have your eyes open, you’re on high alert and making safe choices. I believe this is true for men and women, whether meeting someone from online or from ANYWHERE!

This specific show is focused on dating websites. Though, these types of instances can happen when you meet someone out at a bar or in a class at college.

When meeting someone from online… talk to them. Not text, not email, am actual phone call. You can learn so much from actually hearing a person’s voice. From that give and take in a conversation.

Tell people where you are, who you are with and check in often! Before meeting up, google the name they’ve given you. Take care of yourself, be aware of your surroundings and make sure you have a way to get out.

Trust your gut!! If someone sounds too good to be true, they probably are. If you notice a mix up in their story, then they’re probably lying.

There is no way that these platforms could possibly weed out all the bad guys. That obviously is unfortunate, but there is simply no way. They can make a new account, new email address, new names!

The internet can be a gift, but also a curse. Dangerous people can hide behind a box, making it easy for a predator to find prey. You have to be in charge of your own safety.

What do you think? Have you used an online dating site or know someone who has?
