Neighbors

My Bible study this morning posed this question. What kind of neighbor are you?

We are reading about the proverbs 31 woman. It doesn’t mention in the passage anything about how she may treat her neighbors. Though we have enough other information that we can probably assume.

So, naturally I started thinking of what kind of neighbor I am. In our last 2 houses, we were kind to our neighbors but didn’t really get to know them. Didn’t know names and kept to ourselves mostly. We were renting, didn’t know how long we’d be there… so what’s the point?

We moved into our house 2 years ago. This was the first house we owned and I planned to be here for a long time. Here, I wanted to make sure to do more. As the days rolled on, I introduced myself to any neighbor that was out and about. I started keeping a cheat sheet of names on the fridge.

I know the first names of all of our surrounding neighbors. That was important to me. To be able to address them, not just smile and wave. We’ve developed relationships. Our neighbor behind us has had us over for parties. Another neighbor in the back watched our dog for us while we were on vacation. Our neighbor across the street, her kids are always at our house. I’ve walked her son to school and given him a ride home many times. Her daughter has given mine hand me downs. We stop and chat when we see each other at the kids sporting events or school functions.

I’m the kind of neighbor that will look you in the eye and say Hi when I see you. I’ll ask how you are doing and genuinely want to know the answer.

What kind of neighbor are you?
